I was interested to read that a London church plans to bring "commuter worshippers" to Brighton to swell the dwindling congregation of St Peter's (The Argus, March 14).
Holy Trinity Brompton also plans to recruit new converts by means of the Alpha Course.
In his book Searching Issues, Alpha Course author Nicky Gumbel writes: "The Enlightenment brought enormous progress in science, technology and medicine but within it were the seeds of its own destruction.
Revelation was made subject to reason."
At first glance it's difficult to see how such a dogmatic, closed-minded approach could result in progress.
Yet Holy Trinity Brompton's bizarre plans do indicate progress of a sort.
When push comes to shove, the religious idea that faith can move mountains has been trumped by a secular truth - that trains can move people.
