I am sure many older Brightonians, of which I am one, will have fond memories of our former trolley bus system.

Next year will mark the 70th anniversary of the commencement of this service.

I hope Brighton will, in some way, celebrate this rich piece of our transport history.

One way, which would be popular with both residents and transport enthusiasts, would be to try to recreate the opening ceremony as it was in 1939. This was attended by civic dignitaries and there is a superb photograph which shows the scene of a nice line of brand new trolley buses and some AEC motor buses in their sparkling red and cream livery.

It would be necessary for the organisers to secure the use of a couple of vintage Brighton motor buses. Perhaps the mayor could ring the bus off and commence a tour, as near as possible, of the former trolley bus route which was fourteen and a half miles long.

I am sure the tourism or events team at Brighton and Hove City Council, in partnership with Brighton and Hove Bus Company, could plan a memorable day in next year's events calendar.

I am collecting recollections from former servants of Brighton Corporation Transport. Please send any you may have to ian.steedman@southernwater.co.uk or to the address below.
