A prologue recorded by rhythm and blues legend Dr John introduces this performance of Abram Wilson's new concept album Ride! Ferris Wheel To The Modern Day Delta.
Following in the footsteps of John Coltrane and Duke Ellington, who also wrote themed albums, the New Orleans-born trumpeter and vocalist tells the fictitious story of Albert Jenkins, a young man from the Delta, who abandons his roots to make a difficult journey of discovery.
Opening with the heartfelt I Want More For Me Than This, Wilson takes on the emotional struggle of Albert while his ten-piece band not only deliver an exquisite fusion of aching Delta blues and gutsy New Orleans jazz but also double up as characters in this moral tale.
Wilson is a vibrant and agile trumpeter but also a convincing actor who conveys the intensity of Albert's urban pilgrimage with a perfect balance of warm theatricality and sparkling musical expression.
