The main interest of this postcard of Hove beach is not in the vast swathe of shingle in the foreground or in a few desultory deckchairs.
It is in the background, including the King Alfred leisure centre before the new pools were added in 1982.
There are also some buildings at the foot of Hove Street which were later cleared to make way for a car park serving the King Alfred.
The pavilion on the left-hand side of the picture was used by Hove Council as a store. It was later converted into a cafe called Mrs Bumble's Jim Hawkins of Hove sent in the postcard.
