Queen Elizabeth died yesterday afternoon peacefully in Balmoral, Scotland.

Her Royal Highness came for a guided tour of its grounds with Prince Philip on Monday July 16, 1962.

They can be seen pictured with headmaster at the time, William Stewart, passing rows of students for the occasion.

The visit happened thanks to the headmaster’s efforts. He had got to know the Duke of Norfolk due to their shared interest in cricket, and had often asked the Duke if he could arrange a visit from the Queen.

A spokesman for Brighton College said: “During her visit, the Queen unveiled a plaque to commemorate the day, which can still be seen on the outside of the east wall of the Chapel.

“The day is remembered fondly by those who were lucky enough to be there, and many Old Brightonians from the period consider it their favourite memory from their time at the College.

“Stewart later sent a letter of thanks, and he received a very positive response from Buckingham Palace which confirmed how much the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed the trip.”

The Queen can be seen walking the grounds and unveiling a plaque within the college.
