A mischievous moggy was stuck in a drain for six days after he went walkabout near his home.

James the cat used up one of his nine lives when he had to be rescued by firefighters using a "snake camera" and listening equipment in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham.

A crew from Horsham fire station was called to Shelley Drive at 11.30am yesterday.

It took three hours to finally locate James, who was then reunited with his relieved owner, Rob Williams.

Crew manager Steve Howard, of Horsham fire station, said: "The owner heard the cat, which had been gone for about a week. He could hear it but couldn't see it so he called us."

Staff from Southern Water attended the scene with maps of the drainage system.

The fire crew then lifted several manhole covers before finally finding James.
