Why is it that doctors are so obsessed with waist measurements these days? My own GP seems to have got in quite a state about the fact I measure 39in round the middle and she says I "really must slim down". So what is this all about?

Recent research has shown a big waist measurement is likely to be associated with heart attacks. This is because fat deposited around the waist usually indicates there is also fat around the heart and other organs. Therefore, it really is a good idea to try and aim for a reasonably slim waist.
