A couple are hoping their little business can fill a big hole in Brighton's art scene following the closure of a unique gallery.

Framer Lee Taylor, 40, worked for The White Gallery in Ship Street for about 23 years before a sharp rent increase forced it to close.

The gallery was run by artist Philip Dunn and was the only outlet that stocked his iconic seafront images as well as work by other Sussex painters, sculptors and potters.

Now Lee and his wife Julia, 36, have opened their own Taylor Made Gallery in Brighton Square.

Mr Taylor said: "When The White Gallery closed it left a huge hole in Brighton for that kind of art.

"Most of the stuff you can buy in the city is very contemporary and, although our stuff still has quite a modern feel, it has a traditional aspect which makes it different."

The couple have secured a deal with Mr Dunn and the gallery will be the only place outside the artist's Ditchling home where his work can be bought.

Mr Taylor said: "I was really pleased as Philip's stuff is very popular, especially with tourists."

Like The White Gallery, the couple hope to nurture Sussex talent.

As well as Mr Dunn's work, the gallery features watercolours by Mike Embden, London scenes in acrylic by Colin Ruffell and photography from Roger Bamber and Adrian Turner.

While Mr Taylor continues to work as a framer, his wife is in charge of the gallery and takes care of the business side of things.

Mrs Taylor has had to overcome a kidney transplant and the death of her mother last summer but is delighted to take on her new role.

She said: "My parents have always been in business and I used to do the books for them so I have experience dealing with VAT and so on."

One thing she did need to learn about was the business of selling art and she is grateful for the help of the people whose works she is exhibiting.

She said: "The artists give me their background and other information so I'm quite clued up on the works.

"We've some really good stuff by a lot of talented people so it's really not that hard to sell."
