About 2,400 homes in Sussex and Kent remained without power today after strong winds brought down cables across the two counties.

At the peak of yesterday's storms, 6,000 customers in the South East were cut off, particularly those in more rural areas.

An EDF Energy Networks spokesman said: "We had teams out across the region again from early this morning to restore supplies as quickly and as safely as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to customers."

In West Sussex, the Environment Agency said several bulldozers were on the beach at Selsey, near Chichester, shoring up shingle levelled by the storms.

Around 30 people had to be rescued from West Sands Caravan Park on Selsey beachfront after crashing waves came over an 800m section of the shingle sea defences and flooded around 50 caravans.

Part of the caravan site was submerged but an EA spokeswoman said high tide overnight did not present any new flooding problems to the area.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said it had stood down its involvement at the site.
