I was in Bristol a week before the smoking ban came into force last year and was pleased to see the city taking responsibility for alerting the public to a potential litter nuisance. Large banners were displayed around the city warning people that dropping cigarette butts on to the streets would result in a £75 fine.

In Brighton, the tiny, intermittent and almost unnoticeable paving slab messages, like the one outside Boots in West Street, don't compare. Brighton and Hove City Council certainly does not seem to seriously discourage the dropping of cigarette ends alight or otherwise on to our streets.
