A 16-year-old boy is recovering in intensive care after he was stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife.

The boy, named locally as Luke Kennedy, was left critically injured after what police are describing as a "vicious attack" in Fitchet Close, Crawley, yesterday afternoon.

A 14-year-old boy is still being questioned after being arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detectives are appealing for the public's help in finding a large black-handled kitchen knife thought to have been used in the attack.

It may have been discarded on a street in the Ifield area of Crawley.

Luke was taken to Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, London, after the attack at about 5pm yesterday.

His condition today was described as critical but stable.

Det Chief Insp Trevor Bowles, of Sussex Police's major crime branch, said: "A teenager suffered serious stab wounds in a vicious attack at a friend's home.

"We are urgently searching for a knife which we believe was discarded nearby. We are keen to talk with anyone who has information about its whereabouts."

DCI Bowles also appealed to anyone who saw a young man emerge from a house in Fitchet Close in an agitated state to come forward with information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999, quoting Operation Kinsale, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
