The allegations of child abuse at the Haut De La Garenne youth hostel in Jersey has filled me with dismay (The Argus, March 7).

I would, however, like to mediate for teachers and those who work with children.

I taught for 42 years and I learnt that people become teachers for two reasons; because they genuinely love children or because they seek power.

Among my many colleagues most of them were in teaching because of a genuine love of children. There were very few power seekers.
