The wind and rain lashing Sussex is causing chaos on the roads.

Gusts of up to 80mph have brought down trees across the county, blocking many roads.

Three trees, including one of more than 40ft were toppled in Offington Avenue, Worthing, and two more are blocking the B2036 at Ansty and Balcombe.

The A272 at Coneyhurst, Longhurst Road in Horsham and Glebeside Close in Worthing are also blocked.

The winds have also brought down two chimneys in Mannings Heath and Horsham.

The Environment Agency (EA) has warned people to stay away from coastal areas and to check for flood warnings for their area by calling its Floodline on 0845 988 11 88 or visiting www.environment-agency.gov.uk People due to be flying from Heathrow and Gatwick today have been advised to check with airlines before leaving home.

Channel crossings between the south coast and France have been cancelled, as have some rail services.

Paul Leinster, the agency's director of operations, said: "There will be a potent cocktail of strong winds, wave action and high tides tonight through until Wednesday.

"The gale force winds will combine with spring high tides to significantly elevate the water levels along the coast by up to 1.5m over normal levels which is likely to cause some flooding."
