THESE pictures show the moment a fire broke out at Brighton Palace Pier yesterday evening.
Fire crews and Sussex Police were called to the incident at around 7.50pm.
Crowds gathered around the pier, with one passer-by saying that the blaze was around 8-10ft tall.
They added that water was dispensed from above and that the flames were extinguished prior to the arrival of the emergency teams.
Another said that quick thinking members of the public used “what hoses they could get their hands on, to pour water in between the planking and reduce the damage”.
Sleeping bags and other items can be seen to have been damaged by the blaze.
A spokesman for ESFR said: “At 7.50pm, we were called to attend Brighton beach (beneath the Palace Pier) following reports of a fire in the open.
“Firefighters from Preston Circus attended. A small fire was out on arrival.
“Crews used a Thermal Imaging Camera to ensure that there were no flare ups and we left the scene at 8.06pm.”
