AN EYEWITNESS who saw two men “jump off" Brighton Palace Pier has described the aftermath of the incident as like something out of a “horror movie”.
The witness told how paramedics performed CPR on one of the men for “30 minutes” while “a hundred” people watched on from the beach before it was closed off.
Police, ambulance crews and the RNLI all attended Brighton seafront yesterday, with a helicopter also spotted circling over the coast at around 7pm.
Two men were taken to hospital. Police have yet to provide any update on their condition.
Daniel had travelled to Brighton for the day when he witnessed the shocking incident.
He said that part of the beach was closed off while the emergency services attended the scene.
Daniel, who did not want to give his surname, said there were around a dozen emergency workers attending to the two patients.
He spoke of the shock he felt as the entertainment on the beach, including a balloon man and a bungee jump trampoline, continued while emergency services attended to the two men.
“It was surreal,” he said.
“A very shocking experience.
“Children were still bouncing up and down while a huge scene was going on.
“It was like something out of a horror movie.
“There were lots of police, ambulances, there was a helicopter.
“There were lots of police cars, sirens all around the pier.
“People were getting upset.
“There were 100 people watching or more.
“It was very surreal.
“There were lots of people screaming and lots of little children who were scared.
“It was very distressing.”
Daniel said he saw paramedics put the two people in ambulances.
Police issued a statement following the incident on Sunday evening.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Two men have been taken to hospital having reportedly jumped into the sea from Brighton Palace Pier.
“Police were alerted to the incident at about 6.55pm on Sunday, August 28.
“Officers supported emergency service partners at the scene and the men were left in the care of the ambulance service and taken to hospital.”
Sussex Police have been approached for an update on the men's condition.
