PLANS to transform a former clothes store into a fast-food restaurant have taken a step forward.
Nando’s has submitted a planning application to Worthing Borough Council pertaining to the former Laura Ashley unit in the Montague Centre, which has remained empty since Laura Ashley’s departure in 2019.
The South African company has submitted plans for the installation of a plant to the rear service area including kitchen extract duct and five air conditioning units.
The application also seeks to extend the hours of operation of the plant to 24 hours in order to “align with Nando’s occupation of the restaurant”.
In 2021, plans for the change of use of the shop unit from retail to restaurant was approved.
And if the application is successful for the kitchen equipment, residents in Worthing could soon be enjoying the restaurant’s Peri-Peri flavoured delights.
According to planning documents, Nando’s will operate the restaurant at ground and first floor level.
The unit comprises a small area at the front of the restaurant, which Nando’s proposes to use as an external seating area.
The application’s cover letter states: “This application seeks permission for the installation of plant to the rear of units 1 -2 of the Montague Shopping Centre in Worthing, as part of Nando’s occupation of and operation from the approved restaurant use.
“The proposed equipment is modern, efficient and will allow Nando’s to operate and function effectively.
“The proposals will not appear dominant or out of character within the surrounding area, nor harm the special interest of the conservation area. As confirmed by the submitted noise impact assessment, the proposals will not adversely impact on any surrounding amenities or well-being, nor will they detract from the historic interest of the wider conservation area.
“As such, it is considered that the proposals adhere with the identified national and local planning policies and guidance.
“Accordingly, the proposals are considered to be fully compatible with the location and remain in accordance with both national and local policies and should, in our view, be approved by the council.”
