FIRE crews from across the county were called to a fire in the open amid warnings of “exceptionally severe” wildfires.
Firefighters from Uckfield, Brighton, Lewes, Eastbourne and Pevensey fought to tackle the blaze that erupted in Lewes Road in Uckfield.
Grassland in the area was left charred as the fire spread, with crews using hoses and other equipment to contain and extinguish the blaze.
The latest fire comes amid a series of other wildfires that have erupted across Sussex in recent days as dry conditions persist and temperatures remain high.
The Met Office has warned that parts of Sussex, including Uckfield, risk seeing “exceptionally severe” wildfires today, with an amber weather warning for extreme heat in place until the end of the day.
However, the dry spell might be coming to an end, with some rain forecast later in the week.
A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms will come into force from 10am tomorrow, with heavy and thundery downpours expected across certain parts of the country.
