PLEASE, no more students in Brighton.
Yes, they may contribute to the local economy (as per your editor's comment, August 3) but they don't benefit the local residents.
They don't pay council tax - so who picks up the tab for collecting and disposing of their rubbish? Ordinary tax payers of course.
I am Brighton born and bred and have lived in Bevendean Crescent for nearly 50 years and seen our lovely area ruined by exploiting landlords who couldn't care less if they let their buildings and gardens go to rack and ruin.
And before people say "but that's why we are building more student flats to free up houses for families etc" that is a load of rubbish.
Students will always want a house, to be independent, free of constraints to party with friends and to be able to park their cars free of charge.
Our London Road has been ruined. We have lost Peacocks, Iceland and Boots to name a few. In order to build more student flats!
Now they want to reconfigure Moulsecoomb Place. They say it will benefit the local residents (they said it about the academic corridor in Lewes Road too) but I cannot see how.
What are they offering us? Our services (medical) in the area are already overloaded. How many more students can we cope with? The answer is simple - none.
