FIRE crews were called to tackle a grassfire which erupted after warnings about the risk of severe wildfires in Sussex.
Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called to Seaford following reports of fire affecting gorse at 7.24pm last night.
Around 75 square metres of grassland was affected by the blaze, which was surrounded by fire crews by 11.33pm.
A fire service spokeswoman said that the area was reinspected this morning, with another inspection set to take place at around 1pm.
It comes as West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) has warned the public about the dangers of barbecues in grassland areas after a wildfire ravaged two acres of land near Littlehampton Harbour.
A spokeswoman for WSFRS said: “The Met Office’s Fire Severity Index shows that the risk of wildfires in West Sussex is very high this weekend.
“Therefore, it is extremely important that residents and those visiting the county take extra care to avoid accidentally starting a wildfire.”
