A SURFER rescued a man who got into difficulty in the sea near the pier.
The man had ingested large amounts of salt water due to the length of time he was in the water and was also suffering from hypothermia.
Paramedics and the coastguard attended the scene last night at 8.23pm near Brighton Palace Pier, with the man being brought ashore by a body surfer.
Emergency services administered first aid before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.
A spokesman for Shoreham Coastguard said: “Please stay away from the shoreline and breaking waves in rough conditions.
“A photo or a bit of wave fun can soon turn into a serious incident before you know it.”
People are advised to call 999 and ask for the coastguard if they see anyone in trouble along the coastline.
