West Sussex Fire and Rescue urged people to avoid open fires in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly, take home litter, including glass, and to call 999 if they see a fire.
The Met Office has warned that wildfires in Sussex have the potential to be “exceptionally severe” should they break out tomorrow, when temperatures are expected to edge closer to 40C.
