Trans Pride returns to Brighton today: what you need to know

The transgender community is preparing for a march through the town followed by an afternoon of celebrations.

Sarah Savage, CEO of Trans Pride Brighton, said: “We have been online the last two years which has been a change and a challenge.  

“It has been great to continue to show support for the transgender community but as we come out of lockdowns it is amazing and empowering to be able to provide an event that everyone can come to and reconnect at. 

“Trans Pride is about community, finding friends and connecting with family and that can only be better in person.” 

The march begins at Jubilee Square near the library at 12 noon and participants will walk down to the seafront, ending in Brunswick Square where the party will take place.

A shorter march will start from the Metropole Hotel at 12:40pm for those with accessibility needs.

Trans Pride Brighton is the first and largest Trans Pride in Europe with the first event taking place in 2013.  

This year will be the tenth annual event but only the eighth in-person due to disruption caused by the pandemic.

Travis Alabanza, a trans performer and writer, will be headlining the park event in Brunswick Square. 

Sarah Savage added: “I fondly remember the way Travis spoke to the protest march back in 2019. It was one of my favourite moments, so I am really looking forward to Travis’s set.  

“It is an honour to have someone who is so amazing and empowering come and share their story and their performance.” 

Travis Albanza said: “I’ve been to Trans Pride Brighton throughout the years and it’s always a pleasure to be back.  

“Right now the transgender community are facing such extortionate and unnecessary targeting, so days when we come together to protest and celebrate ourselves are needed.”
