TWO secondary schools in Sussex have announced they will be closed next week amid a heatwave warning.
A Level 4 heat-health warning has been issued for the entire country for Monday and Tuesday by the UK Health Security Agency, with “exceptional temperatures possible in places” and potential for threat to life.
Both Steyning Grammar School and Thomas Bennett Community College in Crawley will be shut over the two-day period.
In a statement on its website, Steyning Grammar School said: “Due to extreme weather next week we will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
“We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday, July 20.”
Thomas Bennett Community College sent a letter to parents and carers outlining its "online learning expectations" for pupils while it is closed.
It said: “As you will be aware, the country’s unprecedented rising temperatures forecast for next Monday and Tuesday are a cause for concern and we have been formulating an appropriate plan.
“Due to the health, safety and wellbeing of all of our school community, we have taken the decision to learn remotely on Monday and Tuesday.
“We encourage all students to remain at home.
“However, If you have no other alternative, there will be a small number of staff at school.”
Further schools in Sussex have announced uniform changes over the two-day period, with Durrington High School in Worthing giving pupils the option to wear PE kits instead of regular uniform.
West Sussex County Council has urged school leaders to make plans ahead of the hot weather.
A spokesman said: “With temperatures predicted to continue rising into next week, we have contacted all West Sussex schools to share national guidance around managing severe weather.
“We have asked all headteachers to make preparations for how best to manage the hot weather so pupils and staff can enjoy the last week of the school year safely.”
The official guidance from the Department for Education states: “We aren’t advising schools to close during high temperatures, but school leaders should make sure they take any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable.”
