TRAINS services were delayed after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge.
Lines between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon were closed following the crash at about 2.45pm on Thursday, July 7.
As a result of the incident, a limited service was in operation at Coulsdon South and Merstham stations, while other areas were delayed.
A Southern Rail spokesman said Network Rail staff attended the scene, but the lorry had got stuck under the bridge.
At 3.15pm, the spokesman said: “The bridge is on the quarry line in the Redhill area, and we aren't running over it until it is safe to do so.
“Delays of up to 30 minutes are possible between Gatwick and East Croydon.”
By 5.35pm, an attempted to move the lorry had been made by deflating the tyres. However, it was unsuccessful.
Network Rail said their staff were forced to cut the roof of the lorry off, causing further delays which were expected to last until the end of the day.
The lorry was successfully moved at 9pm.
The bridge and surrounding track were inspected and confirmed as safe, and all lines were opened.
By 1.30am on Friday, July 8, services running between Gatwick Airport and East Croydon were back to normal.
