LETTERS of support have poured for an Albion legend who is in hospital on life support.
Peter O’Sullivan, an Albion winger in the 70s, collapsed last week and was rushed to hospital with a bleed on the brain.
He has remained in a high dependency ward at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but has shown small signs of progress.
The Argus asked readers to send in words of support for O’Sullivan, and has been inundated with dozens of letters and more than 60 emails.
One particularly touching letter from Richard Inverarity, of Brunswick Road, Hove, described his first time seeing O’Sullivan play.
“My first ever football match was on October 2, 1976, when someone gave me a ticket for the South Stand at the Goldstone Ground,” he said.
“It was a one-all draw with Crystal Palace.
“From that day on I was hooked on the Albion and am still attending games as a season ticket holder – now at the age of 68.
“I loved watching you play and watched the rest of my home games from the North Stand, and used to travel to away games on the £5 Seagull Special trains.”
Richard said his season ticket is now for the East Stand at the Amex, and he never misses a game.
“I don’t think my back would last 90 odd minutes standing in the North Stand these days,” he said.
“Thank you so very much for all the pleasure and happiness you gave me watching you play.”
Brian Owen, sports reporter at Argus, said the number of letters showed just how big of an impact O’Sullivan had on Albion fans.
“It’s fantastic to see such a great response from fans to a popular player of his era. It shows just how popular he still is, and how many great memories people still have of him,” said Brian.
“If anyone wants to keep sending me messages, I’ll pass them on. I’ve also had about 50 emails which I’ll pass on – they’re all very welcome.
“He was massive star in one of Albion’s greatest ever teams. A fantastic entertainer.”
Peter left the club in 1980 for America, to play for San Diego Sockers, but later returned to England. He retired in 1984.
