BRIGHTON and Hove has been named as the sixth best city for bike users as the world celebrates international cycling week.
The city currently enjoys 39.16 kilometres of route exclusively for cyclists, and drew level with Milton Keynes in a study to find the best locations in England and Wales for biking.
Air quality data, climate and a total distance of cycle paths were analysed to produce the results from insurance advisers, Forbes Advisor.
Kevin Pratt, from Forbes Advisor, said: “If you live in an area that has the spaces and facilities to enable you to get plenty of exercise, that's something to celebrate.
“But even if you aren't, you can hopefully find a safe and enjoyable walking, running or cycling route nearby that will help you stay fit and on top of your game."
"Exercise, for many of us, is its own reward. It helps us feel better, and it gives us the energy and sense of well-being we need to set about our daily lives with a positive attitude.”
Runners in the city, however, are less catered for as Brighton and Hove came eighteenth out of the 112 towns and cities surveyed, using similar metrics.
It comes as the government announced a near £200 million investment last month for new walking and cycling projects around England.
£161 million will be made fund 134 “first rate” schemes implemented across the country, while 19 authorities, including Brighton and Hove city council, will take part in the government’s Mini-Holland initiative.
Xavier Brice, CEO of walking and cycling charity Sustrans, said: “As custodians of the national cycle network, we’re delighted that the government is continuing to invest in these vital and much-loved walking, wheeling and cycling routes.
“This funding will see improvements made to the network in England, connecting cities, towns and the countryside, making walking, wheeling and cycling a safer, more convenient and more accessible travel option for everyone.”
