RESIDENTS are hoping to take control of planning in their community by setting up a neighbourhood forum.

The West Saltdean Neighbourhood Forum would give the area a greater say over its planning matters.

A forum can prepare a neighbourhood plan to set out policies within its area – which must broadly adhere to the city plan.

The West Saltdean community has lodged two applications with Brighton and Hove City Council: one would see the area recognised as a neighbourhood area, the other to elect a neighbourhood forum.

In a statement on its website, the city council said: “Neighbourhood planning gives local people who live, work, or are elected representatives in an area, the right to draw up a neighbourhood plan.

“This sets out a vision for future development in the area.

“If the Forum designation is made, no other organisation can be designated to draw up a neighbourhood plan for the area.”

Six successful forums currently operate in the city, including the Hove Station area, Hove Park, Brighton Marina, Hangleton and Knoll, and Coldean.

Rottingdean Parish Council is also a designated neighbourhood planning body.
