A BUSKER has written an ode to Brighton after falling in love with the city.
Sadie Horler, 21, from Exeter, moved to the city in 2019 to study textiles and business studies at Brighton University and said she became enamoured with the city.
The lyrics of the song, titled ‘Love Song to Brighton’, celebrated the independent and vintage shops of North Laine, the formations of starlings by the Palace Pier and the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
Sadie said that when she visited the city for an open day at Brighton University, it was love at first sight.
She said: “It’s perfect - I didn’t put down any other universities other than Brighton, and it was the only open day I went to.
“Being from Devon, I had to be close to the sea, and I love how creative Brighton is - and so close to London as well.”
However, it wasn’t until she had to return to Devon during lockdown, just months after starting her course, that she was inspired to write the song.
Sadie said: “As much as Devon was such a beautiful place to be, and as safe and as beautiful as it is, it made me realise how much I missed Brighton.
“I missed it so much and I missed the whole vibe of it.
“I didn’t have any plans to release it, but when I came back to Brighton and did more performances, everyone loved the song and some have asked me to release it - so I’m definitely going to.”
One of the people who praised her for the song was former Mayor Alan Robins, who stopped to listen to some of Sadie’s songs while visiting a new performance space in Trafalgar Street.
She said: “He loved it and said he really enjoyed it - it was so nice to chat to him.”
When asked what her favourite thing about Brighton is, Sadie said: “You can’t beat the sun setting and you are sat on the beach facing the sea and the pier, and the starlings flying around together.
“It’s just so stunning to watch that - you’re just in awe.
“But everything about Brighton is amazing - there really is a sense of community here and everyone is just so friendly.”
Sadie, who has been writing and performing her own music since she was 15, plans to stay in the city after completing her university course earlier this month and intends to do more performances and songwriting over the coming months.
‘Love Song to Brighton’ is set to be released later in the summer, with her music available to listen to on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms.
