THUNDER and lightning hit the county last night and into the early hours of this morning as raging storms brought torrential rain.
The thunderstorm came following The Met Office announcing that temperatures could rise to 25C in Sussex.
One video sent into The Argus by Luke Usherwood showed one of the many lightning strikes in Brighton last night. The stunning video showed the bolt from the Coombe Road area.
Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon warned of an air mass moving up from the south which is why thunderstorms have been brewing.
He said: “We’ve got an air mass moving up from the south which is helping to bring some warm air with it and why we’re seeing some of the highest temperatures of the year.
“It’s the same reason why we’ve been seeing the thunderstorms over the past few days as well. That will change as we go through the week, with fronts moving in and bringing ever so slightly fresher air.
“One thing to note is that the particular high of 26C is quite confined to the south east.”
While last night looked like the most dramatic weather we will see, tonight could bring more of the same.
The Met Office advised that “showers or longer spells of rain, locally heavy and perhaps thundery, will gradually clear eastwards overnight. Dry conditions with clear spells will follow for most, with winds becoming light. Minimum temperature 11C”.
