CRIME has decreased at one of the city's main parks after the introduction of a new police hub.
The hub, which opened in April, is being used by Sussex Police to “increase their visible presence” at The Level in Union Road, Brighton in a bid to reduce crime.
The force said its hub has been a success so far, with a 62 per cent fall in reported crimes between March and April.
Its engagement hub can be found by the fountains in the park and is open for people to visit and speak with officers who will be there every day during the summer.
As well as aiming to deter crime in the area, police say they also want to be able to answer queries and concerns people have and “continue to build a positive relationship” with young people.
Andy Saville, chief inspector of Brighton and Hove’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “The engagement hub has come about because we want to get out into the communities. We want to listen to what the problems are and what people want. It provides a great space to get out, especially on days like today.
“There have been problems down at The Level historically and we are really keen to make improvements to make it an enjoyable and safe space for people in Brighton and Hove.
“It allows us to have that initial engagement to build trust within communities, listen to what peoples’ concerns are and have a presence down here.
“This park historically has faced issues of criminal damage, anti-social behaviour and drug activity. They’re the main things we're focusing on, we’re not going to tolerate that in Brighton and Hove.
“The Level is a cornerstone of our city, it’s important we’re ahead of the game to make it as enjoyable and safe as possible.
“By having a visible presence, it reduces and deters criminal activity. We want people to feel safe and able to enjoy this park without the fear of being the subject of a crime.”
There is an engagement event at The Level tomorrow which will involve Sussex Police, as well as other emergency services.
The hub may continue throughout the winter but this is yet to be decided.
