PETROL is cheaper is West Sussex than East Sussex, it has been revealed.

West Sussex ranked as the fifth cheapest county in England to purchase petrol, according to data by Admiral Car Insurance.

The average price of petrol in the county is 158.9 per litre.

Meanwhile, East Sussex ranked as the fourth most expensive county, with an average price of 165.3 per litre.

In comparison, Northumberland is the most expensive with an average price of 174.7 per litre , while North Yorkshire has the cheapest with an average price of 148.4 per litre.

Admiral Car Insurance calculated how much the average motorist is set to spend on petrol over the next 12 months, based on the local cost of fuel versus the local median salaries.

While Northumberland topped the charts, Dorset ranked as the second most expensive with Cornwall in third.

This was followed by East Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Somerset, Merseyside and Norfolk.

Surprisingly, the notoriously expensive capital only ranked as the ninth most expensive in England with an average petrol price of 163.7 per litre in London.

After North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire ranked the second cheapest, followed by the Isle of Wight, Shropshire and West Sussex.

Greater Manchester has the sixth cheapest, followed by Lancashire, Herefordshire, Buckinghamshire and Suffolk.

An Admiral Car Insurance spokeswoman said: “The fuel crisis has been all over the news and with no end in sight, Admiral Car Insurance has pinpointed the most expensive counties to refuel your car, as well as, breaking it down by the most expensive compared to annual salaries.”

Earlier this year, The Argus revealed the cheapest places in Brighton and Hove to buy petrol after a record-breaking cut in fuel duty.

As of March, Asda in Hollingbury took the top spot as the cheapest place in the city to buy petrol.

This was followed by Asda at Brighton Marina in second place and Sainsbury's in Old Shoreham Road in third.

The BP garage in Lewes Road ranked in fourth place.
