THE MOST dangerous cities for cycling have been revealed.
Brighton and Hove has ranked the tenth most dangerous city for cyclists in the UK.
According to data from Claims.co.uk, Birmingham is the most dangerous, while Chelmsford is the least dangerous.
Cycling in the UK has surged by almost 200 per cent since Covid lockdowns, according to the injury claim website.
After scraping more than 12,000 cycling routes from its cycling network site, it analysed the number of bike accidents, average steepness, surface quality and lighting across the routes, to assign a danger score for each UK city examined.
The site gave Birmingham a cycling danger score of 7.38 out of ten.
In the city, cyclists are most likely to suffer from poorly-maintained road surfaces and steep pathways, where less than 50 per cent are equipped with optimal lighting.
Meanwhile, Brighton and Hove scored an overall cycling danger score of 5.67 out of ten.
The city scored an 8.75 for steepness, 6 for average bike accident severity, 4.5 for surface quality and 2.75 for dim lighting.
Newcastle placed in second, followed by Plymouth, Sheffield and London.
Preston was sixth, followed by Manchester, Stoke and Bristol.
Chelmsford is the safest UK city for cycling, earning an overall danger score of only 1.79 out of ten.
The number of bike crashes (16) is the second-lowest of all places analysed, being slightly behind Gloucester in fifth (12).
Worcester takes second place with a danger score of 2.71, followed by Nottingham, Lincoln, Gloucester, Cambridge, Leicester, York, Wakefield, St Albans and Norwich.
