IT WOULD be hard to find a band who had so few tunes yet gained such a swirl of enthusiasm from fans in the way Wet Leg did ahead of their debut album, with only five tracks previously available on Spotify.
But as their eponymous record was released last Friday, their steadfast gang of supporters were given more to get stuck into – and get stuck in they did at the band’s show at Brighton’s Chalk last night.
The show was put on by Resident Records as part of its out-store gig series, which always promise to be sweaty, spine-tingling affairs – and Wet Leg were no exception.
Fronted by founding members Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, the band opened with lead track from the album, Being In Love, and received a raucous response from the sold-out crowd.
Rattling through hits such as Angelica and Chaise Longue, the five-piece from the Isle of Wight put on a show to rival even the most experienced indie bands, though ditched the miserable stage presence often associated with today’s artists, instead looking genuinely happy to be playing to a crowd.
The audience were along for the ride just as much as the band – an electric atmosphere and a group on the cusp of stardom giving it everything they had went hand in hand for an unforgettable evening.
And while it’s not certain Wet Leg’s brand of quirky, bass-driven music would translate to the country’s arenas or stadiums, one thing that is for sure is they most certainly have arrived to take over the UK’s club scene – and don’t look to be leaving any time soon.
