AFTER six weeks of public voting, a new restaurant has won the coveted title of best restaurant in the city.

The Bravos (Brighton Restaurant Awards Vote Online), the city’s only entirely publicly generated food and drink awards, produce top 20 lists of restaurants across 16 categories, which are promoted for a whole year by the award’s organisers Restaurants Brighton.

Burnt Orange, which opened in June last year, has taken the prestigious title after receiving local and national praise in recent months.

Independent vegan pub The Roundhill in Ditching Road scooped up two awards - a first for the awards - for both plant champions and most sustainable.

The achievement comes after the pub gained national and international acclaim for winning the Bravo award for best roast in 2020, and ahead of the opening of their new vegan fine dining restaurant, Kokadema in East Street.

Co-owner Max Aben said: “Brighton is often voted one of the best places in the world for vegan food and we are so proud to be at the forefront of this.

“Winning the sustainable category shows that eating a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to help the environment.”

The best roast title this year went to Haus on the Hill in Southover Street, which also secured second place for best local.

The Bravos encourage friendly rivalry between local businesses in the race for the crowns each year, with two rivals - Moksha Caffe in York Place and Starfish and Coffee in Egremont Place - continuing to battle it out for best cafe and best brunch.

This year, Moksha Caffe took the title of best cafe, with best brunch awarded to Starfish and Coffee.

Among the other winners across Brighton and Hove, The Grand Brighton took the title for best afternoon tea in Brighton, while Gungho in Preston Street won in the cocktails category and The Geese in Southover Street took the crown for best local.

Jo and Co in Church Road in Hove was awarded the title of best team, with Bincho Yakitori winning in the international category, with pizza restaurant Fatto a Manno being crowned the best restaurant in the For the Family category.

Smorl’s in the Open Market took the crown in the eat well for less category, while Mexican restaurant Carlito Burrito took the title in the good to go category, with the title of best wine list awarded to Plateau in Bartholomews, while Pitch took the crown in the Sussex finest category.
