A RAILWAY station was evacuated after a “suspicious package” was found by police.
British Transport Police and Sussex Police officers were called to Brighton station shortly before 5pm on Monday, April 4.
Police said the railway station was evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious package.
As a result, the station was closed to all passengers – causing delays to trains.
A Southern Rail spokeswoman said: “Emergency services are dealing with an incident at Brighton station.
“The station is currently closed.
“The station is being evacuated and you should delay travelling to Brighton station at this time.”
At about 5.30pm, the package was found to be safe, and the station reopened to the public, police said.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to Brighton station shortly before 5pm following reports of a suspicious item.
"The station was evacuated as a precaution while the item was assessed, and it was deemed to be safe a short time later.
"The station was reopened around 5.30pm."
Southern Rail announced on social media that the station had reopened at about 5.47pm.
“If you've been delayed by 15 minutes or more then you can claim delay repay,” the spokeswoman added.
While the station was closed, passengers were able to use their train tickets on Brighton and Hove Buses between Brighton, Hove and Worthing, as well as Brighton, Lewes, Seaford and Eastbourne.
