A SELECTION of artists showcasing work at the Brighton and Hove Artists Open Houses festival have been revealed.
The visual arts festival is due to take place over four weekends in May, starting on May 7, marking the 40th anniversary of the event.
Hundreds of artists will be opening their houses and studio spaces to the public, offering the opportunity to buy direct from them in their own homes.
The offerings include artwork, ceramics, homewares, crafts, jewellery, children’s toys, Christmas cards and food gifts.
Some of the highlights in the 40th anniversary of the festival will include award-winning fine artist Faye Bridgwater.
The May festival is the largest event of its kind in the UK.
Here are some of the artists taking part:
House of Pop - Kemp Town Trail
Flat 1, 27 New Steine, Brighton, BN2 1PD
Dave Pop! is a Brighton artist creating bright, bold pop art "with a generous topping of seaside sauce". He recently painted a huge mural in North Street in a fairground style using dynamic colours, baroque swirls and fancy lettering.
Devils Dyke Farm
Devils Dyke Farm Cottages, Devils Dyke Road, Brighton BN1 8YL
New to Artists Open Houses for 2022, this venue just outside Brighton has stunning views over the South Downs and the city to the sea. Devils Dyke Farm is on the historic site of the terminus station of the Dyke Railway, complete with the original platform, and this is the first time it has been open to the public since1938.
The range of artists and makers has been curated by Lisa Green of Treacle and Ginger, and the location will also be hosting Figment Arts. Work on display will include ceramics, paintings, textiles, jewellery, leather work and photography.
The Pink House - Hanover Trail
78 Queens Park Road, BN2 0GL
First timers Floppy Toast Design Studio will be exhibiting from The Pink House on the Hanover Trail. Floppy Toast is made up of two New Zealanders who now call Brighton home. They will be showing brand new abstract art and colourful typography prints.
The Dog Show - Brunswick Trail
33 Sillwood Road, Brighton, BN1 2LE
Joanna Osbourne will transform her Brighton Regency townhouse into a gallery showing over 200 pieces of dog art by 15 artists. Popular and regular artists showing include Sally Muir, Joanna Osborne, Robin Parker, Lorraine Corrigan, Bridget Baker, Katharine Pollen and Gemma Rees plus eight new artists. Also featuring this year will be a postcard silent auction called The Secret Dog.
There will be around 75 postcards by well-known artists including Jock McFadyen RA, David Ward, Sandy Nairne and Emma Chichester Clark.
The postcards will be displayed both at the show and online, with final bids on the last day of the show. All the proceeds will be shared between the Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal and Wild At Heart Foundation.
Clara Wilkinson - Hove Trail
Flat 1, 33 Adelaide Crescent, Hove, BN3 2JJ
Clara is an artist and illustrator and one half of Living Wall Murals which is a collaboration with artist Mary West. Clara will be opening her colourful Regency flat to exhibit oil paintings, works on paper and giclee prints from her series called Beneath The Surface’
Also available will be her observational drawings of people and places from her travels and around Brighton and Hove. Clara’s house will be open for the weekends of May 6/7 then again on May 20/21
Ruth Mulvie – Hove Trail
1 Courtyard Lane, Hove, BN3 4BP
Ruth is a contemporary fine artist known for her vivid palette and unexpected detail in her paintings. Ruth has a preoccupation with swimming and swimming pools and says "where better to display work than in the surroundings of a gorgeous 1940s pool"?
This year Ruth will also be combining her art with performances of synchronised swimming and spoken word. There will also be an evening event with further live performances and cocktails to enjoy the perfect summer evening ambience around the pool.
Faye Bridgwater – Brunswick Trail
22 Spring Street, Brighton, BN1 3EF
Faye is winner of both Artist of the Year and Artist Open House of the year. In 2022 she brings a new collection of originals to Brighton’s newest art space The Gallery Muse. Faye’s bright, bold, joyful paintings have been exhibited at Glyndebourne and The Saatchi Gallery. She paints contemporary landscapes inspired by the South Downs and Sussex coastline.
Visitors will be able to view and buy original and hand-finished limited editions and talk to Faye about her inspiration.
Robertson Yard Studios – Fiveways Trail
Robertson Yard, 42a Robertson Road, Brighton BN1 5NG
Built on the site of a derelict Victorian soft water laundry, Robertson Yard studios is home to 15 arts and crafts practitioners, including ceramics, glass blowing, painting, taxidermy, jewellery, lapidary, metalwork and more.
Artists include nationally renowned artist metalworker Jon Mills and jewellery maker Vivienne Ridley, whose work incorporates carefully selected antique and vintage finds.
This year also features Bea Odd Creations Her work combines diorama and taxidermy.
Jane Palmer and Friends – Fiveways Trail
239 Preston Drove, Brighton BN1 6FL
Jane Palmer and friends are back for 2022. Jane was voted Artist of the Year in 2019. This year they will be exhibiting work that includes painting, sculpture and ceramics from Jane herself along with Pam Glew, Tan Kingston, Lucy Bristow, and Stef and Nigel Hunter.
The Ceramic House – Fiveways Trail
75 Stanmer Villas, Brighton BN1 7HN
This year The Ceramic House is hosting an international residency, two Irish sound artists collaborate with two Estonian ceramic artists and their work will be on display, accompanied by an exhibition of contemporary ceramics by leading Estonian artists.
Peripheries is the first event in Edges, an ambitious international ceramic and sound art project between Estonia, Ireland and the UK that will continue until spring 2024. The artworks are displayed against the unique background of Kay Aplin’s architectural ceramics.
Cecil Rice – Seven Dials Trail
16A Granville Rd, Hove BN3 1TG
This year will be Cecil Rice’s 23rd Open House. Winner of 2018 AOH Best Painting, you can expect original watercolours and oils of Brighton, Venice, Sussex, cityscapes, seascapes, and landscapes along with prints and cards.
Patsy McArthur – Kemp Town Trail
Flat 2, 77 Marine Parade, Brighton, BN2 1AE
Scottish artist Patsy McArthur opens her house for the first time with a solo exhibition of original drawings, paintings and prints as well as rarely available small studies and sketches from the studio. Patsy's career spans 20 years and she has exhibited extensively with recent shows in Miami, London, and Geneva.
Best known for her large charcoal drawings of figures in motion and often in water, her work deals with themes of escapism, strength and freedom. Her home reflects her work and reveals her inspiration with views to the sea.
Dion Salvador Lloyd – Hove Trail
18 Goldstone Villas, Hove BN3 3RQ
Brighton-born established artist Dion Salvador Lloyd will be opening his home and studio for his 22nd consecutive year of the festival and will be exhibiting a new collection of contemporary abstract sea and landscape oil paintings and works on paper alongside new botanical works inspired from in and around the South Downs and the Sussex coastlines.
New framed limited edition signed prints will also be available to view. Dion has an exciting year ahead with exhibitions including a retrospective solo show at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery starting this September.
Becky Blair and Friends – Hanover Trail
66 Brading Road, Brighton BN2 3PD
After last year’s fantastic response to Becky’s first Artist Open House and being shortlisted for the Best Artist Open House 2021, she will be opening her home for a second year. Artists Maria Tilyard, Annie Slack and Rachel Entwistle will be returning and showing their work alongside Becky.
There will also be the mobile sculptures by Claire Knill, Laila Poppy Laurel's award-winning wood design and the surreal sculptural works of Amy Douglas. Alongside the exhibition there will be workshops and demonstrations.
