Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a family festival celebrating the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer. Teams of friends and family fundraise for life-saving research then unite at a weekend-long festival to honour everyone affected by cancer and celebrate the progress made in research.
Sign up to Relay For Life South East taking place at South of England Showground, 18 June 2022. The festival is focused around a 24-hour relay where team members take it in turns to walk around a track, to show that together we’ll do whatever it takes to beat cancer. You can take part in Relay For Life as a team captain, team member or as a cancer survivor.
Cancer Research UK spokesperson Rhianna Haywood says “Thanks to you, we’ve helped double cancer survival in the last 40 years. Today, 2 in 4 people survive the disease. Our ambition is to accelerate progress so that 3 in 4 people survive cancer by 2034”.
Cancer survivor Shirley was diagnosed with breast cancer in both breasts in 2016, she received 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a mastectomy, a lumpectomy and breast reconstruction, followed by 25 rounds of radiotherapy. Near the end of her treatment, Shirley was asked to take part in Relay For Life as a special guest. She wanted to give something back after all the life-saving treatments she had been given.
Shirley said “It was so emotional and humbling to be part of something so wonderful alongside so many other survivors and teams. I loved the spirit of Relay For Life and the following year I got my own team together. Relay has helped me form some incredible friendships and rebuilt the confidence that cancer took away from me”.
During the weekend Relayers participate in an incredible event of celebration and remembrance. You can enjoy a variety of games, music from local performers and hear about Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking science.
One of the most cherished moments of the festivities is the Candle of Hope ceremony. This is an unforgettable experience as we light up the evening with candles to honour every life touched by cancer.
Rhianna Haywood says “We are absolutely determined to continue our vital research to create better treatments for tomorrow, but we need your help today. By starting or joining a Relay For Life team, your fundraising will make a difference and together we will beat cancer”.
