RESIDENTS are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed amid a large fire at a port.
Emergency services responded to the blaze at East Quay in Newhaven at about 12.40pm on Tuesday, March 22.
Industrial equipment is believed to be on fire, according to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
“We are currently attending a fire at East Quay, Newhaven,” a spokesman said.
“There is a large plume of smoke, and we are advising nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed.
"Firefighters are dampening down the scene and extinguishing any flare ups."
Crews from Newhaven and Brighton are currently at the scene.
Firefighters are using foam to extinguish the fire.
Lewes District Council also urged locals to keep their windows closed.
"We have had reports of a fire at H Ripley in Newhaven Port," a council spokeswoman said.
"East Sussex Fire and Rescue are in attendance. If you live nearby, please keep doors and windows shut to keep out any smoke."
