A SEAFRONT boardwalk is nearing completion after a mysterious false opening at the weekend.
Visitors to Brighton beach made use of the new boardwalk on Sunday, though they were surprised to find only part of it had been built.
Signs alerting people to the work being carried out were removed leading people to believe the walkway was open – though this was not the case.
Brighton and Hove City Council was unable to explain why the signs had gone missing.
“The work signage was not removed by the council at the weekend,” said a spokesman.
“As work is ongoing, our contractors have now reinstated it.
“Work on several crossing points across the Volk's railway track is almost complete.”
The 800m boardwalk will cover the area of beach from the bottom of Dukes Mound to the Black Rock electric railway station and “provide easy access for all beachgoers”.
It is due to open on Thursday, April 7.
It is part of the council’s Black Rock rejuvenation project, which is to “greatly improve the environment and infrastructure of the eastern seafront”.

Phase one of the project is to be completed this spring, according to the council’s website.
