A POLICE officer waded “waist deep” through a boggy marsh to stop a person hurting themselves.

Police Constable Norman entered the area near the River Adur to stop a person suffering from mental health issues who was “intent on hurting themselves”.

According to Adur and Worthing Police, she managed to hold on to the distressed person in the freezing water until other help arrived.

The person was detained under the Mental Health Act, and was provided with blankets by a number of nearby residents.

An Adur and Worthing Police spokesman said PC Norman returned to the police station to get warm and was allowed a hot drink from the tea fund, free of charge.

The incident happened on Friday, March 11.
