EOD then arrived on the beach and carried out a controlled explosion just after 12pm.
A spokesman for Selsey Coastguard said: "Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach has been found to still be highly explosive still, like today's piece.
"So, please do not touch it and call the Coastguard straight away on 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
"In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial 999."
