Pet rescue shelters are always looking for responsible pet owners to adopt the animals in their care.

The RSPCA Sussex Brighton and East Grinstead Branch is no different and cares for around 600 animals, birds and reptiles each year.

Because they are a separately registered branch of the RSPCA they are responsible for raising their own funds, so if you aren’t in a position to adopt an animal right now, you can still support their work by making a donation.

However, if you are on the look out for a tail-wagger to join your family, take a look at these five, all in search of their forever homes.

Reggie

The Argus:

Breed: Lurcher
Age: 4 years

Reggie is not actually at the shelter but was previously adopted at around six months old. However, due to an unfortunate change in circumstances he now needs to find a new home.

Reggie’s favourite things are playing with his ball and going for adventurous walks – he will always be up for a snuggle on the sofa and loves being under blankets. He loves human attention and is great with kids.

Like most lurchers he doesn’t get on with cats, small animals such as rabbits/guinea pigs and foxes.

He was badly attacked a couple of years ago by another dog causing him great distress. As a result, he has been unable to be socialised as much as he would have, causing him to be sometimes reactive towards some dogs.

He is housetrained, knows many basic commands and is a delight to have around the house.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, his owner has had to move to a property with just a small courtyard garden. Reggie has bundles of energy so would really benefit from a large garden area and someone strong, with the time to socialise him with other dogs.

Eric

The Argus:

Breed: Lurcher
Age: 2-3 years

Eric came in on February 11 via another rescue as an unclaimed stray.

He is a friendly boy who can be a little shy at first, especially with men, but soon comes around if he realises you have treats!

Eric is ok when groomed and is learning his new name but will need some further training. He walks well on the lead and enjoys playing in a securely enclosed area.

Eric seems friendly with other dogs but will need a home without cats or small animals. He can be a little vocal and whiney when he sees other dogs as he wants to go and say hello to them all!

Tara

The Argus:

Breed: Spaniel
Age: 15 months

Tara came in on January 31 via the local dog wardens as an unclaimed stray. She will soon be having several operations to fix her dodgy knees (Luxating Patellas) and would love to find a comfy home to recover in.

Now, this could be a little tricky as she is a bouncy 15-month-old pup and she will require several months of care but if you think you could offer Tara a temporary foster or preferably a permanent home, the RSPCA would like to hear from you.

She ideally will need to be an only dog or could live with a calm companion that won’t encourage charging around. She could possibly be homed with older children who can understand her care.

Tara will need her own garden and will need housetraining.

Bear

The Argus:

Breed: Terrier cross
Age: 2 years

Bear came in via an Inspector from a multi-dog household and is now ready to find a new home.

He is a very lively, cheeky character who has a lot of energy and is looking for an active owner.

Bear will need complete training, including housetraining as he has not had a very good start in life.

He can be encouraged to play with toys but is more interested in everything else that is going on around him!

Bear is friendly with other dogs after initial introductions but needs a home without cats or small animals.

He could live with children 12 years or older who are used to dogs.

Jason

The Argus:

Breed: King Charles cross
Age: 5 years

Jason came in on January 4 via another RSPCA Branch as his previous owner could no longer look after him.

Jason may look cute but he does have a naughty side so don’t be fooled!

He is a friendly, affectionate boy who knows how to sit and responds to his name on command. He is housetrained and enjoys playing with toys, especially soft ones.

Jason does not like being groomed and is worried by the vet so does need gentle handling in these situations.

He has lived with another dog in his previous home but does take a while to make new friends and can be quite vocal out on walks when there are other dogs around so being the only dog in the home is preferred.

Jason is looking for an experienced, adult-only home with someone who has had cheeky little dogs before and is prepared to work with his grooming/handling issues. He cannot live with children of any age. He is a young, lively boy so needs an active owner and plenty of mental stimulation.
