A PETITION has started to remove a scaffolding that has stood over a high street for six years.
The petition, which has over 700 signatures, is addressed to Lewes District Council and calls for the authority to the scaffolding which has stood above Saxon Lane in Seaford since 2016.
It describes the scaffolding as an “eyesore” for people who live in the town and asks for the scaffolding to be removed due to a lack of building work taking place at the site.
The site on Talland Parade currently has no roof which is why the scaffolding is still up.
Lewes District Council said it understands people’s frustrations and is “working behind the scenes” to solve the situation.
Vision Properties Ltd own the site and has previously been contacted for comment on the issue.
The scaffolding company that was hired by Vision Properties said the it does not break any rules and has to remain until the roof is finished.
In November, James Kearns, 41, director of Able1 Scaffolding, told The Argus: “I know the scaffolding has been up a long time but the building has no roof on it, there is still people working in those buildings. It has to remain until the building is finished."
Meanwhile East Sussex County Council, which manages the highways, installed a walkway last week as a condition of the scaffolding licence.
A spokeswoman said: "The scaffolding is required to enable building works to take place and the walkway, which was put in place by the owner at their own cost, will ensure safe pedestrian access around the scaffold."
A spokesman for Lewes District Council said: “We completely understand and sympathise with the frustration felt by local people.
“Our officers are working behind the scenes and we will share updates on that work when they become available.
“Residents and business owners can be assured that we will continue to do everything we can to resolve this issue.”
The petition can be found on the 38 Degrees website.
