READERS of the Argus have shared their views after a survey found that homes in Brighton are the “dirtiest” in the country.

A clean homes index has revealed the cleanest and dirtiest cities in the UK, according to how often people complete various household chores.

In Brighton, only a third of people (35 per cent) of people said they washed their bedding once a week, with another 31 per cent washing once every two to three weeks.

Meanwhile, a quarter of people in the city said they clean the fridge just once a month.

Overall, the city scored just two out of a possible ten in the clean homes index put together by ConservatoryLand. 

But Argus readers were furious at the survey, and many were quick to defend their own cleaning habits.

Andrea Pearson said: “There are dirty people all over the country. These are weekly jobs to be done and most of us find the time.”

While Sam Watkins said: “Get real. Who cleans the fridge once a month?

Claire Grieveson agreed, writing: “Wow, a quarter of people asked said they cleaned their fridge every month. Every month? It that a thing?

“Seriously, a lot of people are out when not working so their homes aren’t getting dirty.”

On the other hand, some readers said the problem extended onto the streets of Brighton and Hove.

Gabbie Price said: “The whole city is disgustingly dirty, so it’s no surprise. It looks run down and grubby – it’s horrible.”

Paul Taplin wrote: “I remember one place had an outside in the middle of the living area, and rubbish filled the floor.

“I couldn’t walk in, flies everywhere and mould.”

While in the comment section Argus reader A B said: “There’s graffiti everywhere and rubbish all over the place.

“No thought for the environment by beach users, and so on it's hardly surprising overall.”

Brighton ranked as the lowest city according to the research by Plymouth, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Bristol, and Southampton all scored just four.

Belfast was named as the cleanest city, scoring nine.

People were asked how often they completed ten common jobs, including vacuuming, laundry, ironing, emptying bins and dusting.
