A BEACHFRONT sauna is set to re-open next month after having to close due to development works.

Beach Box Sauna Spa closed earlier this month to make way for the Sea Lanes development, but is now set to welcome customers again at the Banjo Groyne on Madeira Drive from the start of February.

However, the sauna and spa will only be open for 56 days as it continues its search for a permanent home.

Liz Watson, owner of Beach Box Sauna Spa, said the council offered her the site as a pop-up while the business continues to look for a new place.

She said: "We cannot wait to reopen. People have been literally chomping at the bit waiting for the bookings to go live and we've created a bit of a sauna addiction in the city I think."

Liz encouraged visitors to the spa and residents to "lend us their support" and send letters to the company backing their bid to find a new home "if we do need to prove to the council how much we're necessary for so many people".

When asked about possible sites for a more permanent home, she said: "There are lots of developments around the city, like Black Rock - which would be lovely, but we just need to go with what the council have given us for now."

Liz said that the council are currently talking to developers at Black Rock on their behalf of the possibility of relocating there.

She said: "There are lots of feelers out, but we love where we are and where we have been given.

"We are putting our feelers out to stay longer here if at all possible but we have to abide by the rules."

The sauna's reopening day on February 2 coincides with the Pagan festival of Imbolc, which marks the first day of Spring and considered as a day of cleansing and hope.

The £4.5 million Sea Lanes development is set to feature a 50 metre eight-lane pool, changing rooms, showers, sauna, studios for training, exercise and yoga, therapy rooms, leisure-related shops, a restaurant and a function room.
