NATIONAL HIGHWAYS has issued an urgent update ahead of a road closure on the A27.
The westbound carriageway between the Ashcombe roundabout, Lewes and the Carden Avenue junction in Hollingbury, Brighton will be closed tonight until 6am tomorrow.
There was concern that the road closure could cause long delays tonight due to Albion’s match against Chelsea at the Amex.
Going to see @OfficialBHAFC tonight at the Amex & worried about our closure on the #A27 at #Falmer? It’s ok, we’ll only start the closure once you're safely on your way home. The A27 w/bound will then close Ashcombe rbt to Hollingbury til 6am tomorrow. https://t.co/kuz4I7Ovog

However, the agency has confirmed that work will not begin until fans have left the stadium.
A spokesman said: “Going to see OfficialBHAFC tonight at the Amex and worried about our closure on the A27 at Falmer?
“It’s okay, we’ll only start the closure once you’re safely on your way home.
“The A27 westbound will then close Ashcombe roundabout to Hollingbury til 6am tomorrow.”
Diversions will be in place during the closure via the A26, B2109, A259 and A23.
The agency said narrow lanes will allow work to safely take place along the central reservation.
A second closure is due to take place from 8pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday, along the eastbound A27 between the Patcham junction and the Falmer junction.
A statement from National Highways said: "We’re carrying out repairs and maintenance to the drainage on the A27 Falmer and A270 Lewes Road.
"These improvements are essential for the safety of road users.
"We’ll carry out the work in stages and, for the everyone’s safety, there will be temporary traffic management in place around the A27 junctions with the A270 and B2123 at Falmer while we complete the work.
"During events at the Amex Stadium, we’ll start closures after traffic levels have reduced."
