A MAN has avoided jail after punching and choking a woman.
Marcus Chapman has been sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, after admitting to assaulting the woman at Hawthorn Bank in Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton.
The incident happened on March 27, 2021.
The 29-year-old has been ordered to pay £1,000 compensation, as well as complete a rehabilitation programme and 180 hours of unpaid work.
Chapman, of Ann Street, Brighton, has also been handed a restraining order banning him from entering Greater Metropolitan College, Moulsecoomb Way or any address linked to his victim until December 2026.
Chapman was given a suspended jail term because of the seriousness of the offence and despite others pulling the defendant back he continued punching his victim.
