THE woman shown on TV dancing with her friend at the Amex has been a season ticket holder for 64 years and said she will “never change” from her dancing routine.
Patricia Maple featured on Sky Sports’s Soccer AM on October 30, when the presenter, John Fendley, said to “spare a thought for one young man down on the South coast” before showing a video of him with his head in his hands as she danced away, before Albion’s match against Arsenal on October 2.
The presenter then added: “At least it was a one off wasn’t it? Of course it wasn’t! She’s a season ticket holder! She was there at the Manchester City game embarrassing him again. We absolutely love her for it."
After The Argus appealed to find out who they were - Patricia’s daughter, Katy, got in contact with us to say it was her mum and the young man was a family friend.
Ever since the Sky Sports appearance, the 77-year-old said it has led to jokes of her being a local celebrity where she lives in Lancing.
She said: “I would walk into the shop and they said ‘do we curtsy or bow?’ and I said ‘don’t you start!’
“It’s quite a small area. I have lived here for over 50 years. They all have a good laugh about it.”
Patricia was seen dancing in the stands to Sussex by the Sea with her friend of 50 years, Geraldine, when they were spotted in plastic ponchos before Albion’s match against Arsenal in the torrential rain.
Patricia said: “It started on Soccer AM. It was a wicked day that Arsenal match, it rained and my daughter got us all these plastic ponchos and we stood there trying to fight the rain off our faces.
“But we have done this ever since we have been there, we dance and sing along to Sussex by the Sea and then sit down and watch the footy. That’s what we always do, Soccer AM just caught us in those last two matches.
“We just have a laugh and enjoy our football. We’re there every game, rain or shine, we have never changed.”
Patricia has been going to Albion matches since the 1957/58 season when her dad started taking her to the Goldstone from their house in nearby Shirley Street, Hove.
She said: “I could always hear them shouting when the goals went in, then my dad took me one day and that was it. I remember Adrian Thorne those five goals at the match against Watford, I can remember that so clearly.
“I have been to the Goldstone, when my husband was still alive we went to Gillingham every game, and then the Withdean. My husband died just before we got Falmer. Dick Knight sent me a letter and I had a signed shirt from the Albion. It was lovely."
Patricia met her future husband, Brian, on an away trip to Charlton when she was 16 and he was 20 in 1960.

Patricia said she goes with plenty of her loved ones, including her daughter, nephew, as well as her family friends.
She added: “The whole family have no choice, they have to support Brighton!”
