WORK to fix a burst main that flooded a street with raw sewage has been completed.

Southern Water confirmed that the sewer pipe in Orient Road, Lancing was fully repaired last night – three days after it burst.

The company said its priority is now to repair the surrounding excavation site and complete a final clean up of the roads and pavements.

Nigel Sweet, who lives in The Broadway near the crossroads with Orient Road, said he was looking forward to seeing technicians and tankers leave the area after days of disturbance.

He said: “We're looking forward to waving bye bye to them all soon. Rain in the night has helped 'flush' the roads.

“But there’s no sign of the large hole in road being refilled or very broken up paving slabs being replaced.”

In a statement, Southern Water said: “We are pleased to conclude that the burst mains pipe in Orient Road, Lancing, was fully repaired last night.

“Our priority today is to repair the surrounding excavation site and complete a final, full clean-up of the roads and pavements.

“We are working with customers to ensure they are completely happy before we leave the area and thank them for their patience during this emergency work.”

Southern Water technicians had been working since the early hours of Tuesday morning to prevent sewage flooding homes and gardens after the sewer burst.

Tankers were sent to the residential street to assist with the repair work.
