THE TOP 49 “coolest” neighbourhoods in the world have been revealed.
Kemp Town has been ranked 26th in the Time Out’s World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods list.
The Danish neighbourhood of Nørrebro, in Copenhagen, topped the annual list of cultural and culinary hotspots around the world.
The list, which has been running since 2018, is complied from public suggestions, before Time Out’s local editors and writers rank the neighbourhoods based on a number of categories including food, drink, nightlife, emerging culture, community spirit and resilience.
This year, more than 27,000 people nominated a city.
Kemp Town was the only neighbourhood in Sussex to feature in the top 49.
Three other areas in England featured on the list – Dalston in London (13th), Ancoats in Manchester (20th) and Ouseburn in Newcastle (29th).
Leith, in Edinburgh, Scotland, ranked fourth overall and Dublin 8 in Dublin, Ireland, placed 15th.
Time Out global editor-in-chief Caroline McGinn said the list is “a love letter to the city at its most joyful and surprising”.
“In the last year, grassroots community culture has been vital to preserving the health and optimism of city-dwellers and the restaurants, bars, galleries and culture spots that make cities such a crucible of invention and social life,” she said.
“It’s inspiring to see how much energy there is in these areas, where communities have come together, hung out and made new stuff, as well as supported other businesses and each other.
“You’ve probably never heard of most of the neighbourhoods on the list, but these are places where a better normal is emerging. I can’t wait to visit.”
